What to wear to an autumn wedding

Thanksgiving means many things:turkey, stuffing, pie, sweet potatoes, brussel sprouts, family, and cornicopii.  For the last several years, for myself and many fellow 20-30 somethings, thanksgiving has become synonymous with weddings.  As I embark on another thanksgiving wedding weekend, I cannot help but think about fall wedding fashion.  Spring an summer wedding ensembles are pretty easy; throw on your favorite summer dress and some heels and you are golden…just avoid white.  Fall weddings can be an entirely different kettle of fish.  I often have it easy as a wedding musician whose choices are limited to black things in which I can play cello.  Bridal party members also have an assigned outfit, whether they like it or not (I haven’t yet had to face this fate, but I understand that it can be less than perfect).

So what does one wear to a fall wedding when not constrained by role.

Colours:

1. Bold in berry.  Purples and berry reds and pinks look good on everyone, are fairly easy to find, and work for any season (choose a darker or plummier colour for a truly autumnal feel).

2. Neat in Navy.  It is a great colour and is pretty easy to accessorize.  It is close to black without being as severe, and it goes with many colours (a bonus when choosing shoes or posing beside friends in the bridal party).

3. Open in orange.  Orange is for the daring and hints that you are fun and friendly.  If you want to go out on a limb (pun intended), try a lovely orange hue (play to your skin tone strengths, or opt for a skirt in orange if you fear the effect on your complexion).  Orange is fun, warm, and sure to draw some eyes.

Styles:

As always, it is wise to dress to your strengths.  The only crucial aspect of wedding attire is appropriateness.  Choose a dress that is not too short or low cut.  It can get a bit chilly in the autumn so consider what cardigan, blazer or sweater you can pair with the dress or forgo that problem by opting for a shirt and skirt combo.

Shoes are always important, especially when you are likely to dance the night away.  Pick something comfortable but chic.  Don’t be afraid to choose a chunkier shoe to make a summery look more hard edged.  Nude shoes are always an easy option, but if you decide to rock a pair of dark tights choose a bright or dark shoe.
